The Board of Apprenticeship Training (NR), Kanpur was established in the year 1970. Since 1973, the Apprenticeship training of Engineering Degree & Diploma holders was brought under the purview of Apprentices Act 1961 by Apprentices (Amendment) Act 1973. Subsequently, in 1986 the Apprenticeship training of 10+2 passed Vocational stream candidates was also brought under the purview of the Act by amendment in Apprentices Act 1961. Since then, the Board continued to deal with Apprenticeship Scheme as per Apprentices Act 1961 with amendments from time to time in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, National Capital Territory of Delhi and Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Some of the major organisational objectives as specified in the Memorandum of Association of the Board of Apprenticeship Training (Northern Region) registered as Society under the Societies Registration Act 1860 include,
- To establish a permanent liaison between the technical institutions and the industry in the Northern Region, comprising of the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, NCT of Delhi & U.T. of Chandigarh.
- To secure facilities for training in different establishments, under Government, Private and Public Sector Organizations for the products of Technical/ Vocational Institutions.
- To make selections for placement from amongst the applicants who wish to undergo training.
- To make out programme of training for trainees in consultation with them and industry and other agencies concerned.
- To provide advisory service in the area of practical training to technical institutions, the industry and agencies requiring the same.
- To award certificates as may be appropriate to those who successfully complete the training course.
- To award stipends, scholarships, fellowships, prizes and medals in accordance with the Rules and Bye-Laws.
- To arrange for dissemination of information of various aspects of practical training through lectures, films and other media of communications.
